instead of having to do the work your self. hire someone.
craigslist has cheap dj is all areas of the united states. some will do it for $150. but you don't know what you will get.
here is a video -
my advise to save money on a wedding is to have it in an off time of the year November, January or March.
and if you really want to save money have it on a sunday or weekday. every thing will be discounted on sunday - thursday.

Four problems with doing that...

1) Rented equipment is usually crap that's been beaten up. No music = crappy wedding.

2) You or a family member or friend is going to have to find equipment and the stuff to hook it up. Then the day, pick it up, set it up, pack it up and return it. You'll need a hefty deposit too.

3) You will spend a lot of time, and possibly money getting all the songs to make a complete playlist. And you'll have to lean on a guest again to babysit the playlist for you, because you could have the coolest playlist known to man, you are not going to script it perfectly to your evening. There will be times where slow dances are in order but your list keeps rocking, or when the place is rocking and you kill it with Have I told you latley. And your guests won't be able to request songs.

4) You'll need another guest to MC. Who is going to introduce you into the hall, do toasts and grace, first dances, and general announcements.

All in all, yeah you'll save money but in doing so you're just pushing the work onto one of your guests, and creating more work and more to do items for yourself. Spend a bit more and let yourself and your guests relax.

We are on a also on a budget and doing something similar. We are renting sound and lights from a audio company we found in the yellow pages. They usually do big events but you can rent the equipment from them. We are having one of friend operate it for us.

Excellent idea...I've recommended this to everyone who has a small budget. Im sure there is a way to rent things like speaker and a microphone. id check in the music section in the yellow pages. If you can find it there ask one of the people you do call to help direct you in the right direction.

Sounds like dj equipment isn't totally necessary, you should just hire what are called "cabinets", they will come with an input socket and you could link to your laptop, and play through, you can link them all together with the leads they will come with to amplify the sound more.
